It's the dress that help Kate Middleton catch Prince William's eye, and now it's fetching a six-figure sum.
Royal romance legend has it that after William spotted his then-friend wearing the see-through lacy dress (pictured above) at a student fashion show in 2002, he started looking at Kate in a new light.
Now the dress that reportedly started it all has been auctioned off for about $125,900 at the Kerry Taylor Auctions Passion for Fashion sale in London, according to People.
The skimpy black number -- so sheer it can barely be defined as clothing -- was made for less than $50 by Charlotte Todd, now 31, who designed what was originally intended to be a skirt while studying fashion and textiles at the University of the West of England. The title of the assignment? "The Art of Seduction."
St Andrews, the school where Wills and Kate first met, later borrowed the dress for a fundraising fashion show and the rest is royal history. As Kate flaunted her fabulous figure in the revealing duds, the prince was snapped in a picture craning his neck to get a better look at the would-be future Queen of England.
"Everyone says that the fashion show was when the romance started and when she bagged her prince, so a small part of me will always be part of royal history," Todd tells People. "It's madness!"
When she designed the dress, she had no idea what it would lead to. "I didn't know who Kate Middleton was and I didn't put her in it," Todd says. "It was just pure chance!"
The person who purchased Kate's dress was an anonymous bidder, so no word on what the plans are for the famous frock. But if the buyer wants his or her own happily ever after, that's one dress that shouldn't stay in the closet.
